I made these Journey Oracle cards from dreams. In 1992 I had a dream in which I was using a deck of divination cards with different images on each side. In the dream the bottom portion of one side contained a fairy tale, while the bottom portion of the other side contained a symbol. Although much has been transformed across the 16 years I have been creating the Journey Oracle cards, these basics of symbolic art and stories of magic remain.
The 94 images that combine into these 47 double-sided revelation cards were painted across five years, and were inspired by gazing at surfaces of rawhide, agate and fossilized shell. During my years of painting the cards became organized into four categories: the Celtic tree months, the full moons, the Wiccan wheel of the year, and aspects of a shamanic journey. These categories became the four colored rims, or theme suits, of the Journey Oracle. As three of these card suits were framed by time—so too was the painting of their oracle art. If I missed the window of time for a full moon, earth holiday or tree month, I waited a year until its particular time became available again. This energy connection between the astrological calendar and the Oracle cards adds further layers of insight to each reading.
Each 2 sided oracle card has a phrase to connect to inner wisdom, and a question to expand self-knowledge. Each oracle divination card is also matched to a story and a group of pronouncements for revelation. These stories have peculiar twists of language and grammar, and inhabit the magic landscape of dream interpretation. When I read the Journey Oracle stories and pronouncements, I pass though a maze of dream images to arrive at meaningful action, emotional healing and inner knowing.
